Lavender oil has gained a prominent position in terms of usage in cosmetics, perfumes, and aromatherapy/spa blends due to its mesmerizing fragrance. Lavender oil is extracted from the flowers of three kinds of plants - Lavendula Augustifolia (Bulgaria), Lavandula Hybrid (Grosso), and Lavandula Latifolia (Spike). The essential oils derived from different lavender plants have different aromas, properties, and applications.
Some lavender plants are cultivated organically or are wildcrafted, they are certified as organic by USDA. The essential oil derived from such plants is certified organic lavender essential oil which is preferred by many users worldwide.
Following are the varieties of lavender oil and their applications
Lavender essential oil (Bulgaria) - It is obtained from the floral tops of the extremely aromatic Lavendula Augustifolia plants indigenously cultivated in Bulgaria and other parts of the world. The plants bear pinkish-purple or bluish flowers. The colorless or pale yellow oil has a strong fresh floral lavender scent. It is the most popular oil in aromatherapy, as it promotes relaxation. It is also effective in allergies, nausea, skin disorders, arthritis, and respiratory problems. The oil finds application as an aromatic and wellness ingredient in numerous personal products. It is also used in making medicinal products and food & beverage items.
Spike Lavender Essential Oil - It is derived from the floral tops of Lavandula latifolia plants majorly grown in Spain by steam distillation. The oil has a characteristic lavender aroma but contains higher camphor compounds and 1.8 cineole. It finds applications similar to previous lavender oil. However, it is more suitable for healing wounds, insect bites, sunburns, headaches, and arthritic pain than true lavender oil.

Lavender (Grosso) oil- It is obtained from the hybrid variety of lavender carrying features of both the lavender plants discussed earlier. It is used in aromatherapy, cosmetics, medicinal formulations, and perfumes due to its aroma and wellness benefits.
Irrespective of variety, lavender oil blends well with citrus, minty, herbaceous, and woody oils. It can be combined with lemon, cedarwood, Amyris, spearmint, eucalyptus, cypress, lemongrass, myrrh, and pine needle essential oils for diffusion, aromatherapy, and cosmetic blends. The versatile properties of lavender oil make it a suitable solo dilution (with any carrier oil) for hair, skin, sore body parts, and respiratory systems.
The Lavender plant also offers one more fragrant product - lavender hydrosol. Hydrosol is the by-product of lavender essential oil. It is aromatic floral water with the essence of lavender. It has purifying and soothing properties. It can be used to cleanse the skin, treat insect bites and spread fragrance in surroundings.
Though European countries are the initial and major cultivators of lavender plants, the plants are grown universally in most parts of the world and therefore, fragrant products based on lavender are available across the world. However, they vary in aroma, chemical composition, and color based on the harvest. Lavender plants cultivated in India are highly & distinctly aromatic and Aromaaz International picks the best lavender species for essential oil extraction. Its selective preference makes it a top lavender essential oil manufacturer in India.
